Why it is so common in pregnancy
During pregnancy the renal threshold drops: the kidneys let glucose pass into the urine at lower blood-sugar levels than before. That is why finding glucose in the urine in pregnancy is frequent and often benign, and does not automatically mean gestational diabetes.
What the values mean
As with other tests, the values (often in mg/dL or as plus signs +, ++, +++) show how much glucose is present, not the exact blood sugar:
- Trace / 100 mg/dL: very common in pregnancy, usually not concerning.
- 250-500 mg/dL (1+ / 2+): worth mentioning to the doctor and assessing.
- Higher or repeated values: should be looked into without delay.

Glucose in urine but normal blood sugar in pregnancy
This is a frequent situation, precisely because of the lowered renal threshold: you can have glucose in the urine with normal blood sugar. It should not be ignored, though, because only blood tests distinguish the benign form from gestational diabetes.
The test that counts: the OGTT
